Article: Alaska Legislature Debates Gas Pipeline.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Alaska lawmakers are debating a proposed contract between the state government and oil companies designed to facilitate construction of a pipeline to move natural gas out of the state.

To review the preliminary contract, Gov. Frank Murkowski called the Legislature into a special session May 10, the day after its regular session concluded.

This month's legislative deliberations are the first step in a process that could see pipeline construction begin in about four years, Steve Porter, deputy commissioner for Alaska's Department of Revenue, said in a phone interview.

Murkowski describes the pipeline as a historic opportunity.
