May 25--San Ramon will form its own police department, acknowledging it will cost more than to contract with the county to provide law enforcement but also citing a desire for local control to rein in the officers' required retirement contributions. The City Council voted 5-0 late Tuesday to instruct city staff members to get the paperwork ready for a vote at the next council meeting, in June. A budget amendment needed to pay for the new department will be considered at that meeting as well. If approved, the transition is expected to take at least a year.
