Israel's new prime minister basks in American praise, with strings attached
DID he get what he wanted? This week Ehud Olmert went to Washington, DC, for his first meeting as Israel's prime minister with George Bush (they had met before as mayor of Jerusalem and governor of Texas). The visit looked like a roaring success. Mr Olmert spent plenty of time with the president and enjoyed the rare honour of addressing Congress. The two leaders said they shared the same view about the need to stop Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.
