In the name of identity fraud prevention, everybody seems to want to ban access to the Social Security number.

If the number is breached, they want to take aggressive steps to hold the responsible company or agency accountable.

Last year state legislators introduced more than 150 bills to curb the use, sale, or display of Social Security numbers. Over 20 states passed laws requiring public notification if one is compromised along with a name.

The federal government is also getting into the act. Key congressional committees are working to draft and pass Social Security number protection legislation.
