Ofcom on Friday said Stephen Carter will step down from his role as chief executive of the U.K. media and telecoms regulator with effect from 15 October this year.

In a statement Ofcom said Carter, who was appointed to the position in January 2003 ahead of the formation of the so-called "super-regulator", will continue to lead on all operational and financial matters until that date, but from 1 August he will not be party to Ofcom's economic, competition and policy decisions.

Ofcom chairman David Currie will oversee the regulator until a replacement is found for Carter.
