The collapse and disintegration of East Germany's socialist project in 1989-90 proved untimely and disorienting for Germany's Left. Leading members of the Social Democratic party had been gaining momentum in their campaign to fully legitimize East Berlin's separate German state. They favored stripping East Germans of their entitlement to West German citizenship. They fought to abolish West Germany's Salzgitter Center, the office in charge of monitoring human rights abuses in the east. They even founded a commission to explore common values between their own party and Erich Honecker's Socialist Unity party.
