May 28--At about $80 a day per inmate, the cost of housing a prisoner at the St. Louis County Jail isn't cheap. The $55 a day the county pays to Douglas, Aitkin and other counties in Minnesota to house inmates is no bargain, either. Last year, St. Louis County paid almost $1.1 million to house inmates in other counties, and that figure only covers room and board, not the costs of medical care and transportation.
