The timing of two shows on the work of artist Eva Hesse--one featuring sculpture, diaries, and background material at the Jewish Museum, the second focusing on works on paper at the Drawing Center--couldn't be better. It's hard to imagine another artist whose sculpture and drawing is as relevant to the concerns of young artists working today. The painter Pat Steir recalls for Interview what it was about Hesse that makes her still matter so much to us.
