Kuwait's legislature voted unanimously Tuesday to remove the ailing Sheikh Saad al-Abdullah al-Sabah as emir, just nine days after he was named successor to the late Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah (OD Jan. 24,p2). The Cabinet promptly named the powerful Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, a half brother of the late emir, as the new head of state.
The dramatic events in the key Gulf oil producer challenged the traditional rules of succession in Kuwait and the wider Mideast Gulf.
