Article: Republican Senator backs alternative fuels.

Warning that energy is the albatross of US national security, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) on Monday outlined bold legislative proposals to promote alternative fuels, including new mandates on oil companies, and to enhance international preparedness for major oil supply disruptions.

Lugar, who has made energy security a top priority for his panel this year, also waded into controversy, indicating he was not averse to legislation fixing an oil price floor of $35 per barrel if that helped alternatives.

Lugar's call comes at a time when average retail gasoline prices have jumped 11 cents in two weeks to $2.41 a gallon.
