Launch your boat onto the 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail, close your eyes and listen.
Construction, Traffic. Old Forge.
Now, look around: wooden docks, motor boats with names like Loon-a-Sea, metal lawn silhouettes of fishermen and bear.
Paddle to the right, under a highway and into the sudden still of an uninterrupted steam. No other boat has dispersed the dusty green pollen that coats this water today. A bird is startled from the reeds. Is something watching? Two pairs of eyes peer from the dark pines along the shore.
