Almost 100 people are killed in a string of bloody battles in the country's restive south as an increasingly daring Taliban brought renewed violence closer to the country's second largest city. Taliban militants fought fierce battles with coalition and Afghan forces leaving up to 97 people, mostly insurgents, dead in Panjwai district just 14 miles from the
centre of Kandahar, and in Musa Qala district in neighbouring Helmand province, where British troops are deployed. Two suicide bombs also went off within hours of each other at opposite ends of the country, following May 17 suicide bombing of a UN convoy.
