LAKE ITASCA
How far? 210 miles northwest of the Twin Cities.
Why go? The oldest state park in Minnesota showcases icons of our landscape: the biggest trees, the Mississippi Headwaters and some of the prettiest lakes in the north, including Itasca (at left).
On a clear day, the view from the top of the Aiton Heights Fire Tower takes in most of Itasca State Park.
It's a stunning scene. Thick stands of red and white pine stand sentinel over more than 100 lakes, each a mirror of the summer sky. From this height, I can see all the reasons the park gets a half million visits each year. I catch ...
