May 28--Expanding Athens-Clarke County's almost maxed-out sewer capacity will cost nearly twice as much as previous estimates, and county officials blame fallout from Hurricane Katrina.
Pegged at about $95 million in 2002, the cost of building new North Oconee and Cedar Creek wastewater treatment plants and expanding the Middle Oconee plant is now estimated to be at least $141 million, and could go as high as $186 million.
The Athens-Clarke Public Utilities Department has been saving millions of dollars a year in fees charged to water and sewer customers to pay for the plants, is considering asking the county commission for a ...
