Agere Systems, a semiconductor provider, has unveiled a new internal modem chip that will reportedly reduce the cost and size of desktop PCs substantially.

According to Agere Systems the SV92U2 USB-based modem chip removes the need for PCI-based modems, enabling desktop PC bus sizes to be reduced by 80%. It also claimed the smaller-sized bus enables the production of PCs that are easier to use.
