May 31--Today is the deadline for would-be owners of the Duluth News Tribune to place their bids. The sale of the News Tribune and 11 other newspapers will help clear the way for the McClatchy Co. to complete its $6.5 billion buyout of Knight Ridder. McClatchy said the outcast newspapers did not provide adequate profits or were in slowly growing markets. Representatives of three companies have toured the News Tribune and expressed an interest in buying the paper with its circulation of 41,500 on weekdays and 64,400 on Sundays.
