BAHRAIN'S showcase industry has a lot to crow about and much to worry about too. This month, Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) completes the first year since its fourth reduction line and new 800-MW power station became fully operational. The expansion doubled capacity and boosted efficiency while environmental engineering has cut emissions dramatically. The downside is the world price of aluminium which dipped under $1,000 a tonne on the London Metal Exchange in early November. As a closed company 77 per cent owned by the state of Bahrain, Alba does not publish financial data but current prices are a blow to its chances of maximising returns from the expansion.
