Jun. 2--It is now clear that U.S. Marines did something dreadful in Haditha, Iraq. The question to be answered is who should be held responsible?
In November, a convoy of U.S. Marines in humvees were hit by what might have been a remotely detonated bomb, killing one and wounding two. The response of the Marines was, in a word, retaliatory. In another word, it might have been murder. After the blast a handful of the Marines fanned out, surely on orders, to find the bomber, perhaps to avenge their loved friends, maybe just to kill a hated enemy.
