Jun. 3--During a 1989 benefit performance at Choctawhatchee High School's Etheredge Stadium, comedian Bob Hope acknowledged the dignitaries in attendance. When he came to former U.S. Rep. Bob Sikes, Hope quipped, "They say your nickname is 'The He-Coon.' What the hell does that mean?"
Twelve years after his death, many newcomers to Northwest Florida may be wondering the same thing. Just who was this Bob Sikes that bridges, schools, highways, airports and libraries are named for? And what the heck is a He-Coon?
