Maurice Horn is holding up a potted clematis, 3 feet high and just coming into flower. "I'm tired of people being afraid," he says as he snips off more than half the growth, losing all the blossoms and leaving a few stems poking out of the container.
Is he crazy? No. It would be cruel, he insists, to plant something that had so much top growth and so little root development. "I'm giving you permission," he says in mock address to the infant vine, "to develop roots at your own rate."
