The UK record industry is lobbying to have standalone digital downloads incorporated into the Official UK Singles Chart, heralding an even greater shift towards music being sold and marketed online.
The move comes as downloads overtake physical sales on the top 40 singles market for the first time, according to figures from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) revealed exclusively to NMA.
If the need for a physical product is scrapped, digital downloads will count towards the chart as soon as a single is put online. This would result in increased revenue from downloads and greater investment in online marketing around the launches.
