NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- Xechem International, Inc. (OTC BB: XKEM) Xechem International announced today that it has received Orphan Drug designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Office of Orphan Drug Products Development, for the five-membered heterocyclic anti-sickling compound known as 5-HMF for the treatment of patients suffering from sickle cell disease (SCD).
Research led by Dr. Donald Abraham of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has shown 5-HMF to be "the best potential anti-sickling agent in 30 years of sickle cell research", performed by his group. 5-HMF not only is a natural product with very little, if any, toxicity, but it has a ...
