IT WAS an extraordinary scene Yasir Arafat, Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, and Bill Clinton schmoozing on the White House lawn, with George Bush, Jimmy Carter, Henry Kissinger, Jim Baker, and a cast of hundreds cheering them on. But are celebrations in order?
It would be foolish to ignore the risks of this agreement--the generic unreliability of the PLO; the violent hostility of the Palestinian irredentists, who will do all they can to sabotage it; the danger that autonomy will evolve into a PLO-run Palestinian state threatening Jordan as much as Israel; and more.
