SAW PALMETTO is an herb used by an estimated two million Americans for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). (1) According to the NIH, 50% of men aged 60 and 90% of men aged 70 have at least some degree of this obstructive urinary condition. (2) A popular BPH therapy before World War II, saw palmetto was listed in the United States Pharmacopeia from 1906 to 1917 and was in the National Formulary from 1926 to 1950. (3) It is well accepted in Europe, with usage approaching nearly 50% among men in Italy and 90% among men in Germany. (4)
