Jun. 6--William Hayes Finch spent his 40-plus years in the Chicago Public Schools at inner-city schools because that was where he believed he could do the most good. As a teacher, assistant principal, principal and district superintendent, he particularly sought to provide a black role model for African-American boys who didn't have such a role model in their lives, said his older daughter, Lisa Finch.
