Jun. 6--Latin America has a long history of unwelcome meddling in its affairs, usually labeled as "imperialism" and usually directed from up north. Odd, then, that the architect of a new imperialism would come from Venezuela. President Hugo Chavez's attempts to export his influence to his neighbors may be proving just as unwelcome. Chavez sees himself as the Latin American counterweight to U.S. influence. While he has clamped down on the press and political opponents at home, he has tried to spread his leftist rhetoric and anti-U.S. attitude to other nations.
