If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Duncan Phyfe is the most flattered furniture maker in American history. The elegant Federal designs so closely associated with his name are still the most popular "period" decorating style today. In fact, Phyfe has been copied for such a long time that the best of these reproductions are now valuable antiques in their own right.
One furniture maker closely associated with Phyfe, and generally credited with compiling much of the source material we know about the master today, is Ernest Hagen. He too was an immigrant (Hagen came from Germany in 1844) who worked most of his life in New York City.
