Alternative telecom service provider The Carphone Warehouse has triggered intensive price competition in the United Kingdom with its offer of 'free' broadband Internet access to customers who pay for its TalkTalk fixed-line telephone service.

The Carphone Warehouse launched a 'free' broadband service in April 2006 and was the first UK operator to do so. However, the actual service will not come into operation until 6th August 2006. Carphone Warehouse will have to use BT Wholesale's IPStream service prior to being migrated at a later date (at no extra cost to customers) to unbundled lines from BT.
