The avian influenza epidemic is continuing to wing its way across Europe, following confirmation on 5 March of the first case of the highly pathogenic H5 strain of the virus in Poland, in a swan found dead north-west of the Polish capital Warsaw. Samples will be sent to the Reference Laboratory in Weybridge, England, to determine whether the bird died as a result of the most pathogenic strain of the virus, the dreaded H5N1.
