Since state and world spadefish records were established in the 1980s, the species has become wildly popular with Chesapeake Bay and coastal anglers.
With more and more anglers targeting spadefish, it was a matter of time until one or both marks were broken.
It helps the odds that Virginia is home to the biggest spadefish in the world.
The state record of 13 pounds was caught in 1988. The International Game Fish Association world record of 14 pounds was caught in 1986. Both fish came from the Chesapeake Bay.
