Gov. Stephen Merrill said yesterday that selective tax cuts and a decrease in the number of state employees are starting to pull New Hampshire from a gripping recession.

Merrill, speaking at the Statehouse, said that although the state has suffered its worst recession since World War II, things are starting to look up.

"New Hampshire, everybody agrees, fell the hardest, but is bouncing back faster than the rest of New England," Merrill said. "On the day I became governor, our unemployment rate was 8.3%. Since the day I was sworn in as governor, 30,000 more people have jobs and are working here in New Hampshire."
