Maybe Clint Barmes wasn't "riding high in April." He was batting better than .300 for only four days and finished the month with a .262 average, which was fine. But in keeping with the Frank Sinatra lyrics, there's no question Barmes was "shot down in May."
His average was .196 when that free fall of a month ended. And that's after a rise of seven points on the final day thanks to Barmes' second two-hit game of the month. He hit .133 in May, going 10-for-86.
Studying video of his at-bats. Taking extra sessions before games in an indoor batting cage. Barmes did all that, and the descent continued.
