Jun. 9--The more one listens to tenor saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, the more appealing he becomes.

Perhaps he's an acquired taste because his gifts as bandleader and arranger exceed his talents as soloist.

And that's not a slam at Coltrane's tenor playing. Though he cannot be ranked among the most imposing of contemporary saxophonists, he holds his own. A solid player with a sturdy technique and a sometimes unprepossessing tone, he nonetheless merits the high-profile engagements that his famous surname have helped him secure (he's the son of jazz icon John Coltrane).
