Jun. 9--Inspirations for new businesses come from all directions.
For Ari Shapiro, "chief smoothie" of Tucson's three-store Xoom Juice chain, it came from his love of bicycling in the San Francisco Bay Area. Born in the Bronx in 1966, Shapiro considered a medical degree and a law degree before it dawned on him that his interest would be in the business world. After spending some time as a "ski bum" in Colorado, he moved to San Francisco in 1990, intending to stay one year.
