This past Memorial Day weekend, I spent a good chunk of my time highlighting in yellow marker the many telling accounts from "Desperate Networks,'' a just-published book from New York Times television reporter Bill Carter.
Therein he depicts, in a very personalized style that focuses on the Big 4 broadcast nets' chief execs and their supporters and detractors, what happened during the 2004-05 television season. At the end, he concludes that what occurred happened by whim or blind stupid luck. But that really wasn't the case; rather, it was all about relationships.
