I have a deck outside my bedroom. Last summer, in the interest of my grandchildren, I agreed to let a pair of pigeons nest on the deck. Over the summer they had two sets of two chicks each. As fascinating as it was for me and my grandchildren, it was messy, smelly and, on occasion, gross.
The baby birds were about as attractive as a pair of winged rats. The parents were sloppy nest architects. The detritus of pigeon families is fairly disgusting. Aside from unused nest materials - twigs, lengths of string, blowzy feathers and broken eggshells, there was the pigeon poop. We could almost see it eating through the concrete pavers on the ...
