I'M IN Adelaide as I write, and, aside from paying brief respects at the statue of its planner, Colonel Light, I am drawn again to the city's Port. This is a rough and ready former dockland, with a protected heritage core, shops made derelict by a foolishly placed mall, and a sprinkle of surviving industry.
Port Adelaide obviously came first (the Europeans came on ships), but Colonel Light wisely founded the city a few miles inland in a more salubrious location. The Port's low life, swamps and mosquitoes had soon been labelled 'Port Misery'.
