Jun. 12--The state and Metro-North Railroad have agreed to buy 11 locomotives to be used on the Danbury and Waterbury branches and Shore Line East.
The $20 million deal will help the state phase out some of its older equipment, including locomotives that are more than 50 years old, said Eugene Colonese, rail administrator in the state Department of Transportation's rail bureau. According to its contract with the railroad, the state will pay about $13 million -- two-thirds of the cost. "Replacing the older equipment gives the railroad more reliability and flexibility," Metro-North spokesman Dan Brucker said.
