BRAZIL embark on the defence of their World Cup trophy against Croatia tonight with coach Carlos Alberto Parreira calling on his players to prove they are worthy successors to the greats of the past.

The current generation are considered one of the most attractive sides to come out of Brazil, but Parreira insists only winning the World Cup again will mean they can be rated with the Pele-inspired teams of 1958 and 1970.

"It is tough to compare eras, to compare the team that won the World Cup in Sweden (in 1958) and in 1970, but this one needs to prove themselves and they can only do this by winning the World Cup," said Brazil's coach.
