The Orbe River begins in France and flows into the Lac de Joux. From there, it gushes over stones and down forested slopes to meet the river called Ida Jougnenaz and then carries on to the town of Orbe. The name changes to La Thiele as it continues to its final destination of Lake Neuchatel.
The first diver explored the source of the river in October 1893. He wore the customary iron suit, a copy of which is on display in the caves. No further research was carried out until 1961, when three divers began an exploration of the caves and the water.
