Vines are garden workhorses, their utility, reliability and beauty earning them spots in most gardens. Vines can screen undesirable views and add a vertical dimension to even the tightest space. They soften hard, unbroken expanses of walls and scramble over inclines.
When we decide to add vines to our gardens, clematis is the plant of choice for many of us. We are drawn to its colorful flowers, its relatively low-maintenance demands, and its versatility. And although clematis deserves a place in nearly every landscape, there are several other worthy candidates for garden inclusion.
