WASHINGTON -- Rockies first baseman Todd Helton never understood the public concern about the early-season struggles of Clint Barmes.
"What is there to worry about?" Helton said. "You've got a guy who plays hard every second he has his uniform on and wants to win. He's got a lot of ability. He can win games with his defense even when he is not hitting, and you know he's going to hit."
There were times in May when that hitting part seemed a particular challenge for Barmes, but it is apparent the patience Rockies manager Clint Hurdle showed with his shortstop is paying off.
