Introduction
The synthesis of novel group 4 complexes is of considerable interest in the context of olefin polymerization using "non-metallocene" catalysts (1). A wide variety of complexes based on the use of surrogates for the Cp ligand have been prepared and many are active in ethylene or cc-olefin polymerization. However, the polymerization activities of isoelectronic (or even isolobal) complexes differ dramatically and often in a contradictory manner. Establishing fundamental trends in, e.g., catalyst activity with respect to parameters such as total electron count, and the steric and electronic effect of ligand substituents has been problematic.
