Jun. 14--LOWELL -- The old adage about strong defense serving as the backbone of championship clubs in all sports may be cliche but it also almost always proves to be true.

Come state tournament time, the journey to high school softball's Promised Land is first and foremost an arms race. But pitching alone can only take a team so far. You have to mix in some timely hits and you simply must be able to flash the leather in the field.

Needless to day, Lowell High's softball team has all three of these aspects of the game covered.
