Jun. 15--It's nearly impossible to just glance at a Diane Arbus photo. Known for her 1950s and '60s portraits, the photographer sought subjects that would make for much more than a pretty picture.
Famous for her bold, thought-provoking images -- identical twins in New Jersey, a "Jewish giant" next to his much-smaller parents, an uncertain looking couple with their children on Hudson Street and a boy holding a toy grenade -- Arbus found much of her inspiration in her hometown of New York City. It was there she captured an eclectic assortment of folks, from nudists to transvestites to carnival performers, on film.
