Jun. 15--"You'll hear plenty of good stories about this year's Mills Race," Jeff O'Connell promised at the post-race celebration at Put-in-Bay.
Not the least of them was O'Connell's own harrowing experience on John Glanville's Kicks, a 33-footer that raced on the Governor's Cup Course. "We were leading our fleet and the wind was really blowing," he said. "We put up the A-sail to get even more speed, when the tiller (steering linkage) broke and the boat started spinning around."
Glanville said Kicks made a violent left turn and stopped dead.
