MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- This visit to New York, he didn't need any "Be Nice to Monty" buttons.
As it turns out, Colin Montgomerie, the man Americans once loved to hate, did just fine on his own.
Battling gusty winds, slow-but- tricky greens and rough that was nastier than Manhattan traffic, the 42-year-old Scotsman fired the only subpar round Thursday to grab the first-round lead at the 106th U.S. Open.
Montgomerie's 1-under-par 69, which left him one shot ahead of David Howell, Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker and Miguel Angel Jimenez, put him in such a good mood that he didn't even mind joking ...
