Jun. 16--The Legislature probably will never eliminate school property taxes, state Senate Majority Leader David J. "Chip" Brightbill predicted Thursday. Brightbill, a Lebanon County Republican who represents part of Berks, said the state decided in the 1800s that local school districts would be responsible for paying for public education. Shifting that responsibility to the state would require replacing the roughly $10 billion that property taxes generate, said Brightbill, who was defeated in the primary election.
