Rock walls bring beauty, have a long history.

Jun. 16--Dating in some cases from the incorporation of the town, Waynesville's rock walls are a unique element of the local history and architecture.

Comprised mainly of locally gathered river rock, the walls were in large part built as earth retention devices. But now, with many of the walls a century or more old, some of them are falling apart. Others have simply been removed.

"The rock walls in Waynesville are one of the greatest historical features we have," said Bette Sprecher, chairwoman of the town's historic preservation commission.
