Jun. 16--INDEPENDENCE -- Buchanan County officials pushed other options off the table this week, opting instead to build a new jail facility south of the courthouse. A committee charged with studying the issue eliminated three other choices, which included renovating the existing jail or adapting the former county home outside Independence.
The new facility will cost an estimated $4.3 million but is among the cheapest alternatives, said Jim Matarelli of PSA Dewberry, a design firm based in Peoria, Ill. Matarelli said county officials told him the jail adds to the problem of an already cramped courthouse.
